Sydney Cup

David and I went to the Sydney Cup on Saturday for a work function. I spent a lot of time in the previous week shopping for a dress. It is so hard to find modest formal clothes. The dress I wore was the only modest one I found! We had fun at the event with lots of nice people to chat to, heaps of food (too much!!), and pretty horses to watch.

The only other time we have watched horse racing was at Happy Valley in Hong Kong. This was also for a corporate event.

A few things stood out to me from that experience:
  • There were heaps of people there. Horse racing seems to be a big deal in Hong Kong.
  • The racecourse is surrounded by highrise buildings. The residents would get a nice free view of the races.
  • We were able to do a tour of the racecourse and see the horses up close. The horses were so shiny and muscular.
  • The Hong Kong Jockey Club is a not-for-profit organisation. All of those gambling profits (or losses depending on whose perspective you take) are donated to charity - about one billion Hong Kong dollars per year.
