It's-a Mario Party

We held Ethan's 6th Birthday party on Saturday. He requested a Mario theme. We have decided that Ethan can have a large (whole class) party every second year. In the 'off-years' he gets to invite a small number of best friends to his Birthday. Turns out that the small party was more work than last year's big party!

Mario x 2, Luigi x 2 and Princess Peach.

All of the boys constructed their own Mario or Luigi Karts. I painted the boxes at home prior to the party and then the boys added pictures and drew on lights, racing stripes etc. We had a few quality issues with wheels periodically falling off, but otherwise the karts held together well.

Once the Karts were finished the boys completed their looks with Mario/Luigi hats and moustaches. I had tried to find some red and green caps in the stores, but as it is winter most shops had monochrome beanies on offer, not brightly coloured hats. I resorted to making my own caps out of newpaper and masking tape.

We played some Mario Kart-themed games such as 'What's the Time Mario?' and 'Red Light Green Light'. The boys also did a treasure hunt for chocolate gold coins.

Blowing out the last candle.

Ethan had requested a 'Mario riding a motorcycle' Birthday cake. I told him that I wasn't capable of constructing such a cake, so we settled on Power Star cupcakes on Rainbow Road.

At the end of the party the boys played a game on the wii.
They picked....Sonic.
