Eggs a la Japanese

A couple of months ago I discovered that there is a Japanese supermarket in Sydney called Tokyo Mart. I love roaming the aisles of international supermarkets, so this I definitely had to check out! One morning after dropping Ethan at school, Erica and I made the trip over to Northbridge and picked up some Japanese goodies.

One of my finds was a set of Japanese egg moulds. Not an extremely useful purchase, but I like my eggs whimsical and fun.

I prepared a couple of hard-boiled eggs (after a little trial and error I discovered that jumbo-sized eggs work best). Immediately after removing the eggs from the boiling water I ran them under some cold water and carefully peeled away the shells. The eggs were then placed into the moulds and clipped shut as such..

The moulds were placed into the refrigerator for approximately 10 minutes. After sufficient chilling, the moulds can be unclipped to reveal a very cute boiled egg..

Here is the star version..

Sliced open to reveal the yolks.
