Things I am Grateful For..

  • That David had a day home from work yesterday
  • That after taking Erica for a visit to our GP, and being told she had to go to the Emergency Room, David was home to help.
  • That my friend Angela's husband had also taken the day off from work and had picked their kids up from school that day, so Angela was home when I rang asking if Ethan could play at her house for a while.
  • That when we arrived at the Emergency Room there were only five people waiting and Erica was the only child.
  • That we were seen quickly by a nurse and then quickly by a Doctor.
  • That there were hardly any people in the paediatric section so we were given some privacy in a room.
  • That the Doctors and Nurses were lovely and kind.
  • That Erica was co-operative with the Doctors.
  • That Erica's temperature came down.
  • That she didn't need to be admitted overnight and we were back home a few hours after we left.
  • That David didn't get a parking ticket.

This was starkly different from my ER experience with Ethan when he was younger. We went to an Emergency Room at approx 9pm on a Sunday Night. It was packed with people. We waited for four hours to be seen. After that he was admitted overnight, but the hospital was incredibly full, so we were given a stretcher in a semi-curtained area of a hallway. I tried to sleep in a chair, while also being woken every hour by nurses checking on Ethan (which was ok because they needed to) and hearing the cries of all the other children around us.

David was away on a business trip. As soon as I called to tell him what was happening he went to the airport and waited until he could get a flight home. He arrived home after Ethan had been discharged. He was discharged earlier than would normally occur due to the crowding in the hospital. I had to learn how to treat him and what symptoms to look out for, with strict instructions to return if his condition worsened. Thankfully it didn't!

The alarm with Erica was that her temperature had become very high and that her right eye was turning in. The Doctors at the Emergency Room don't think the virus has caused her eye issue (being sick may have just made it more apparent). They think it may possibly be this (the accomodative esotropia toward the bottom of the page). We will be seeing an Opthamologist to have her eyes checked.

Oh Megan, so glad that Erika is fine and you had a good experience at the hospital under the circumstances. Having sick children is so frightening and having the support of your husband when you need it is such a blessing.
