Zig Zag Railway

While in the Blue Mountains we took a trip on the Zig Zag railway.

Clarence Station and our train. Unfortunately the steam train was out of action that day.

Ethan excited to board the train.

At one of the stops along the train journey.

Walking the tracks.

Photo taken from the train of part of a viaduct (only just snapped the picture in time). Very Hogwarts Express!

Ethan in front of Thomas the Tank Engine. Unfortunately Thomas didn't have has face on that day.

While we were riding the train, David and I made a comment to each other that we hoped this trip wouldn't resemble a particular train trip we took in Thailand. We then discovered that we had never shared that story with Mum. I was probably trying not to worry her, but she knows it now, so here is the story.........

We spent a day visiting Kanchanaburi Province with our main interests being The Bridge on the River Kwai, Hellfire Pass and the Death Railway (maybe the names should have served as a warning). It came to be known as the Death Railway due to the number of people who died building it. The railway was constructed by the Japanese during World War 2 using allied prisoners of war. It links Thailand with Burma.

Here is me in front of the Bridge on the River Kwai. This is the real one. The one from the movie was built somewhere in Sri Lanka (by the way the movie is really good, worth seeing if you haven't yet).

We meandered through pretty Thai countryside (see above) towards the Thailand- Burma border, when out of nowhere a bullet came through our window. Fortunately the bullet didn't hit anybody, but the two girls sitting right next to the window (and right next to us) had a few cuts from the glass shattering. We were all a bit shocked!

Later we were told that when the bullet went through the window we had been travelling through farm land. The farmers shoot birds and we were probably just unlucky to end up with a stray bullet hitting our window. Definitely the most dramatic train trip I have ever taken.
