Costco

I promise this will be the last of my posts describing Melbourne shops.......

but how could I not give you a run down on Costco!! David was greatly mortified that I took these photos. However, I persevered because I thought some of you may like to see photos and read our thoughts on the Docklands Costco store.

From what I've read in newspapers it seems like many of us could end up with a Costco store near us at some point in the coming years. We get a Sydney store in a few months! Hence why David and I let our curiosity overcome us and joined the Costco juggernaut while we were in Melbourne.

Costco sells a huge range of products and most of those products are huge (ba-dum ching*). In one location you can pick up groceries, furniture, white goods, televisions, clothes, mattresses, car batteries and even diamond rings (and lots more).

You don't want your kids sneaking something into the trolley when you walk through the confectionery aisles. Not that my kids could lift most of the products......

Piles of clothes. There were some good buys in here. I remember seeing items from Calvin Klein, Levis, Nautica, Hugo Boss, OshKosh and more. There are no changing rooms, but if something doesn't fit it can be returned for a full refund.

Orange American cheese.....

My little cupcake with the big cupcakes. Not only did the packs contain a lot of cakes, but each individual cupcake was quite large. There were also super-sized cheesecakes, fruit pies, carrot cakes, mud cakes etc.

You can pick up a leather lounge with your milk and bread. Impulse purchase?

Ethan took this shot while I was putting groceries away back at the apartment. He caught me with a very large bag of Reese's peanut butter cups and a bag of peanut butter-filled pretzels. Yes I love my peanut butter products. I remember that the unit price of the Reese's cups was approx $1 per 100g, allowing me to treat these more as regular confectionery and less like the scarce precious resource I usually do. I am proud to say that those jeans still fit!

Some extra thoughts -

  • Great pre-prepared meals which were very handy for us while we were away. All of them tasted lovely.

  • The fresh produce we bought was very good. Tasted great and lasted very well.

  • Large tubs of greek yoghurt that were supremely yummo and a better price than I have seen in delis or supermarkets (but unfortunately I can't remember the price off the top of my head).

  • 1kg of frozen berries for about $5/6.

  • Ethan is a huge fan of the cinnamon raisin bagels.

  • We had a quick look at the watches (because David needs a new one) and spotted a watch that usually retails for about $1000, selling in Costco for approx $400. We didn't buy it, but for somebody else that would easily justify the membership cost in one purchase.

  • It seemed like every second person had a huge quantity of toilet paper in their trolley.

  • Avoid shopping at midday on a Saturday - super crowded. However, there were lots of free food samples to try.

* That is supposed to be a rimshot (ie the drum sounds that come after a joke). I was trying to lift my lame joke. I have decided to clarify this because David pointed out that the strange sequence of words in the brackets made no sense to him.
