We spent a few hours wandering along the pier and the beach, then explored some of the streets back behind the beach. David and I were both a bit underwhelmed. There are probably exciting things to do here, but we didn't find them. Maybe the beach alone isn't much of a drawcard when you have spent your life near the coast? Probably similar to my wonderment anytime I see any quantity of snow, but David who has lived in Winnipeg and Utah says 'ho hum'.
Santa Monica Pier
There was a memorial beside the Santa Monica Pier. I couldn't get a shot that showed all of the crosses. They represent American military personnel who have lost their lives during the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some of the crosses bore messages and photos.
Americans seem to be far better at showing regard and respect for their military than we are in Australia. Sure we have memorials and ANZAC day. However in America, special thought for the military seemed far more common and 'everyday'. For example, at the baseball all current and past military members were asked to stand and were given a round of applause. At nearly every hotel, event and attraction we attended there was a discount for military members. It was nice to see.
