First Day of School

Ethan, Erica and Clara on the first day of school.

I now have two children at two different schools, and one still at home.  Ethan has moved onto a new school this year.  He was offered a place in an opportunity class.  It was a big achievement for him to score highly in the placement test and be offered this place.  Fortunately for us Ethan was offered a place in our first choice school, which is the closest one to our home that offers the program.  So far Ethan is really enjoying his new class and has made some new friends (there are a number of children that are similarly keen on soccer, and another who he competes against in athletics).  Ethan still sees some of his friends from his previous school as we still go there to pick up Erica every afternoon.  Ethan's friends have declared his new uniform to be the worst colour combination ever.  I have to say I agree!

We decided to keep Erica at her current school, rather than moving her across to the new school with Ethan.  Erica loves her new teacher and has some nice friends in her new class.  She has been coming home every day smiling and happy.  At the end of last year Erica's teacher told the class that if they kept a journal and wrote a review of the books they read during the holidays he would give them each an ice-block.  Erica did exactly this.  She brought in her journal and book reviews on the first day of school to show her teacher.  It turns out that Erica was the only student who remembered, so her teacher gave her all of the ice-blocks to take home!  When we picked up Erica from school that day she proudly showed me her entire bag of Zooper Doopers!

I think it has been a little bit of an adjustment for Clara to go back to not having her older siblings at home during the day.  However, the much bigger adjustment was Dad going back to work after he finished his leave.  For a while Clara kept calling out "Dad, Dad, Dad" and she would knock on the front door from the inside.  Maybe she thought he was standing on the other side.  When Daddy does finally arrive home from work he gets the best ever welcoming committee from Clara who usually runs crazily down the hallway calling out to him.
