A lot of Ethan's time for the first part of this year was consumed with preparing for and sitting entrance exams for high schools. He has been sitting tests to gain entrance into selective and gifted & talented programs. We won't find out the results of those for another few months. He still may have to do some interviews. This is Ethan out for lunch with David after he had finished his last exam..
In the mean time Ethan has also won his school's public speaking competition and will be moving onto the next level to compete against other schools. Ethan has been practising not saying "ummm" or "like" (in the wrong context) so that he can improve his impromptu skills. As part of the competition they have to present a prepared speech and then on the day they also receive a topic with five minutes to prepare an impromptu speech.
He has also been selected to play in the Regional soccer competition for school, meaning he was one of 14 kids picked from across about a hundred schools. He has done training for that, but the competition hasn't started yet.
Ethan finished 3rd in his school cross country and will compete at the next level soon. He also competed in the school swimming carnival. He finished third* in every race for his age group (the same two boys finished first and second in each of the races). Unfortunately he doesn't get to go to Zone for third place in the swimming carnival, but is ok with that because amongst everything else he is doing, including tours of potential high schools, he has missed quite a bit of school this term! Everything should go back to normal next term. Fortunately for us his entire class is in a similar boat (he is in a special class for academically advanced children), so the teacher has adjusted somewhat for all the random absences occurring at the moment.
* Ethan would like me to clarify that he doesn't finish 3rd in everything.
