West Lake is a massively popular attraction for Chinese tourists. We visited during the Chinese New Year holidays, so it was crowded, but fortunately the lake is huge so there was lots of space for the crowds. We could see why it was so popular. The beautiful lake is surrounded by lovely Chinese gardens, parks, pagodas and temples. There are lovely little islands in the middle that you can sail to.
Yes I'm starting with a picture of McDonalds. We passed this as we were walking to the lake. I think this is one of the cutest looking McDonalds I have ever seen.
David and the kids looking out over the Lake.
This picture is taken on Xiaoying Island. You can hire costumes and have your picture taken. We need to do this one day.
Looking across to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (the cement towers sticking up out of the lake). During the mid-autumn festival they have candles inside which release light across the water. This scene is also featured on the one yuan note.
Zoomed in on one of the Pools Mirroring the Moon.
David and Ethan. That is Leifeng Pagoda in the background.
Red Carp Pond. The fish seemed like they might be overfed. They weren't bothering with the abundant fish-food on the surface of the water. Or perhaps they knew the surface of the water was cold.
Ethan having a quiet contemplative moment. Very zen.
We had now made our way around the lake to Leifeng Pagoda.
Ethan and I took the stairs. The rest of the family took the escalator.
View from the pagoda.
The pagoda was originally build in AD977 but collapsed in 1924. It has since been rebuilt. It now features an elevator in the middle of the pagoda.
