A couple of hours drive from Guilin are hills filled with rice terraces dotted here and there with little villages. We went on a guided hike of the Longji rice terraces.
The mistiness in the air is because the sky was getting ready to rain. Luckily it held off for us. We came during the wet season because this is when the terraces start to fill up with water making them look very pretty. There is another time of year right before harvest where the terraces look yellow which I think would also look fantastic.
Before we had started the hiking.
There are little guesthouses here and there where people can stay overnight. Our guide told us that a lot of photographers like to do this because they can wake with the sun and get some great shots.
King of the Rice Terraces.
Trying our best to get a group shot.
Some pictures of the grave sites that are scattered throughout the hills. We were still hearing firecrackers going off periodically as people came to pay respects to their ancestors. We theorised that Grandma probably would have approved of the natural settings of these burial sites.
A Zhuang Minority woman harvesting plants from the hillside.
The further we progressed on the hike the more spectacular the scenery became, and the more water there was in the rice paddies. There is a farmer in the bottom left-hand corner of that picture.
A picture to show Clara when she is older because she will probably forget these awesome sites.
This part is called 'The Dragon's Backbone'.
A pretty awesome sight!
Erica and I as we were heading back down from the terraces (and David in the distance).
Walking along a bridge about half-way along the hike.
