Hoi An Fishing Trip

There are a lot of different activities and tours that can be enjoyed in Hoi An.  We decided to take a tour where we visited a local fishing village and then went out on boats to try different fishing methods.

All of us on the end of the big boat we travelled on.  There was a large boat, and then we sometimes transferred to smaller basket boats (pictures of those further down).

All of us again!  The tour guide took a lot of pictures of us.  We had just been learning about how to operate that large fishing net behind us.  It was also raining.

On a smaller fishing boat some local fishermen (and woman - it was a brother and sister) taught us how to cast a fishing net into the water and then pull it back onto the boat.  Some of us caught fish, some of us come up empty-handed.  Erica did the best, which was funny, because she was also the most worried about touching fish.

Some of our haul.  That wouldn't get us too far.  Not sure if that Confucian saying 'give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime' is accurate in our case.

Erica with one of her fish!  Ha!

Clara on the beach learning how to cast a net.  They had a small one for her to try.

This is me operating a very large fishing net that was out in the ocean.  I had to use me hands and feet to push the sticks around.  This turned the log which rolled up the rope, which in turn lifted the net out of the water.

Once the net was lifted, it was determined that I had been successful!  In had done all of that work to catch one fish! Ha!  A man in a basket boat floated underneath the net, pushing the fish along the net until he could pull it out of a hole on one end of the net.

We also spent some time in basket boats.  We learnt how to steer and paddle.

When the French arrived in Vietnam, they levied taxes on boats.  The fishermen started building these basket boats and argued that they were baskets, not boats, hence they could not be taxed.  We saw many basket boats across the beaches of Hoi An and Da Nang.

Our basket boat 'driver' took us on a trip through some of the coconut mangroves and he made the girls some toys from the fronds.

Back in the fishing village.  Our guide told us that this house cost about $15,000 USD to build.
