Khai Dinh Tomb

This tomb was built for Khai Dinh, who was the 12th Emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty.  It is a beautiful place, surrounded by green hills.  It didn't really dawn on the kids until we were half-way through that this entire complex was built for one person as a burial site.

Khai Dinh was actually a very unpopular Emperor, because of his close relationship with the French.  When he decided to have this mausoleum built for himself, he increased everybody's taxes by 30%!  He had visited France, and there is a lot of French influence in the building.  Inside the tomb the decoration is very ornate and gold.  There is a large statue of the Emperor that was cast in Marseilles.

Clara having a grumpy moment.  She wanted to be first up the stairs.  As you can see she was last.
