These markets claim the title of being Asia's largest fruit and vegetable markets. I think some of the markets in China could rival that claim. Biggest or not, they are very big! This is a main wholesale area for fruits, vegetables, spices and flowers in Chennai.
These markets are located a fair hike from where we live, so it's not a regular stop for me. I visited with a group of ladies from school.
I can't remember what these are called. I did learn it at the time. The produce was really fresh compared to what is often seen in the shops.
Walking into the flower markets.
There were lots of stacks of flowers - the petal parts, not the stems. These are used to make artistic displays or to float in a bowl of water. There were very few bunches of flowers.
Some flower wreaths. These would be used for weddings.
Me in the background there.
This is not in the markets. We had lunch in a nearby shopping centre. This was painted onto one of the walls.
I snapped this picture while we were driving around. I was catching the image of the child's feet with the anklets. Many children wear these. At Church you can hear some of the young children coming because they jingle everywhere they go.
Again, not the markets (obviously). We caught the train to Koyambedu, as there is a stop right outside the markets. The stations and trains are very clean. They also have women's-only carriages. The system is being expanded down the ECR and OMR (two major roads in Southern Chennai near where we live), but I don't think it will get close enough to us before we are due to move on from Chennai.
