Our safari was organised through our accomodation which worked out to be fantastic. They picked us up right from the hotel, and co-ordinated everything. Tourism is still down in Sri Lanka. We were there during what should be peak time over the Christmas holidays. On our way into the safari park we saw a lot of safari vehicles and drivers sitting idle, waiting. It must be really tough for those who rely on tourists for their income. Hopefully things pick up again soon, as it is truly an amazing country to visit.
Getting ready to leave on the safari. Those gashes on the poles are from branches hitting the vehicle, not tigers and lions :)
We saw some elephants early in the safari, and then they all disappeared until right near the end.
A pretty bird.
A peacock. We saw lots of peacocks. We saw lots of peacocks both in the wilderness reserve and out of it - just walking along beside the road at times.
Water buffaloes. We could also see crocodiles, but only through binoculars.
The elephants reappeared as the sun was setting. This was by far the most interesting animal to watch.
More water buffalo.
If an elephant is walking or standing on the road, the safari vehicles cannot go too close, so we all wait until the elephant decides to move on.
Looking into the wildlife reserve from the road as we were driving back to the accomodation.
