The elephant orphanage rescues and cares for orphaned baby elephants and injured elephants. We stayed in a hotel in Pinnawala that overlooks the river where the elephants come to bathe/play.
There was a small group of elephants brought down to the river first who were sicker, and some elephants who were 'in musth' (in heat). They seemed to be under tighter control.
Later there was a much larger group of elephants.
We were out shopping when we realised the elephants were walking through the town.
From what I was told, the elephants in chains (only in the earlier group) were the ones that were more aggressive from being in musth. They were chained to different spots in the river, with lots of space to still move around, but I guess also limiting their ability to charge other elephants (or people!).
It was so fun to watch the elephants.
